BAFMENG-MENCHUM DIVISION: MILITARY INTENSIFIES ROMANCE WITH POPULATION.

The Commander of the 5th Joint Military Region, Brigadier General Nka Valere, took gifts made up of food stuffs, didactic materials, farm inputs and encouragements, to the inhabitants, pupils and students, defense and security forces at Bafmeng in Fungom Subdivision of the Menchum Division.

The increasing collaboration between defense and security forces and the population in the face of the ongoing socio-political and security crisis in the North West region has been strengthened during an outing of Operational Control by the Commander of the 5th Joint Military Region, Brigadier General Nka Valere to Bafmeng in Menchum Division from March 10-12, 2022. The visiting Commander braved the bad road to Bafmeng in Fungom Subdivision with a special moral boosting message from the hierarchy of defense and security forces battling those who have taken up arms against the state.

He saluted their sacrifices and commitment to help normalcy returns to communities that have suffered pain and frustrations with killings, kidnappings and threats that do not help matters for the teaching and learning process.

The Mayor of Zhoa Council, NJAH TITUS NDONGKEH, thanked Brigadier General Nka Valere, Commander Of the 5th Joint Military Region for his choice of Bafmeng in Fungom Sub Division, for the Security Assessment Mission and Civil/Military Activities in Menchum Division.

The landlord of Zhoa Municipality presented the Council area, before underscoring the challenges to which the population are confronted, and like Oliver Twist, he asked for more.

“Brigadier General, Zhoa council has 26 villages, but for the purpose of planning the council area was carved into 35 planning units. The council has a total surface area of 7000km and a population of over 148.000 inhabitants. The council is bounded to the North by Furu Awa council and the Benue state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the South by Menchum Valley and Wum Councils, to the East by Taraba state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the West by Fonfuka council. The geographical location, the vast nature as well as the enclave nature of Zhoa council, makes it vulnerable in so many fronts in terms of security. Our closeness to Nigeria and the poor nature of the roads, makes the task of mounting security at borders very difficult and as a result, most of the weapons use by non-state armed groups in the region, pass through some of these remote roads. The idea of opening and developing of roads in Zhoa Council is more of a security concern. Hope you could use your high office to implore the services of Genie Militaire to open up some of our roads as well as to rehabilitate some roads which have not been maintained for a long time. This will relief the suffering masses and will ease the job of security personnel in case of intervention and reinforcement of law and order.

Cross view of the population of Bafmeng

Our people equally faced a lot of difficulties in establishing identification papers, people trek long distances from Abar to Esu and from Bafmeng to Esu or wum to be in possession of this important document. In line, we plead for identification centres to be open in Zhoa and Bafmeng to help reduce the sufferings of the people of Fungom Sub Division in establishing their National Identity Cards. […] I will like to use this opportunity to thank the Commander of the 5th Joint Military Region and his team for choosing Zhoa municipality as a beneficiary of this gesture. A complete health team has been here in Bafmeng since the 09th of March 2022 and have been consulting, screening and providing free medication to the population. The donation of 200 benches, didactic materials as well as the sporting activities will go a long way to improve the learning conditions and the spirit of living together all over the municipality. We are more than grateful, the food items and the farming tools you will be distributing here today is a stitch in time because this is the beginning of the farming season. The people of Zhoa municipality from Gayama to Koshin, from Bafmeng to Sangwa are very happy and are praying that the almighty God should give you wisdom and good health in carrying out the duties assigned to you by the Head of State.”

Traditional and municipal authorities of Fungom subdivision showered praises to defense and security forces whose presence increasingly inspires hope for the protection of people and property. That is perhaps why they appealed for more security control posts and reinforcements in areas yet to be free from attacks.

The population of Bafmeng in Menchum Division have been encouraged to denounce separatist activities and above all to conquer fear and live in peace. The call was made by General Nka Valere, Commander of the 5th Joint Military Region. He urged the population  to stand as a unit.

"Fear is the greatest enemy anyone can have. Who are the fake generals that are giving you sleepless nights? I am a general and you can see and feel me.  Fake people should not take you hostage" General Nka Valere told the crowd.
