NORTHWEST REGION: STAKEHOLDERS EVALUATE 2021-2023 NATIONAL STRATEGIC PLAN TO FIGHT HIV/AIDS.

Stakeholders involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases have resolved to double efforts to ensure the rate of new infections reduce by 60 percent as well as curb HIV –related mortality by 70 percent and improve on the quality of life of persons living with the disease. Governor, NWR They took the resolute commitment at the end of a three-day  workshop that held from the 26 to the 28 of January 2023 with the aim of consolidating the evaluation of the HIV/AIDS National Strategic Plan (NSP), 2021-2023. Twenty-nine brand new Yamaha 100 motorbikes were handed over to 29 public, private and faith-based health facilities in the Northwest on December 23, 2022. As a result of Minsante-GAVI cooperation, this equipment aims at improving vaccination services and most importantly to reinforce the outreach strategies of health centers in the community. In a region where vaccination performance has been significantly affected by six years of socio-political, humanitarian and security crisis, it was timely that such an initiative was undertaken to boost performance. The handing over ceremony was presided over by the Northwest Regional Health boss, Dr Che Soh Kingsley. He urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the equipment and that the differences in coverage should be felt in the early months of the coming year 2023. North-West Region: Youths poised to advocate AIDS-free holidays

Some young peer educators from across the North-West Region of Cameroon, will soon begin sensitization campaigns on how to make a healthy and responsible holiday without AIDS. Acting under the canopy of the 20 th  edition of a campaign aimed at reducing the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS amongst youths dubbed AIDS-Free Holidays , they will embark on a three-week awareness campaign with the aim to reduce the risk of STIs and HIV infection amongst school, university and unemployed youths. COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT; MEDIA PROFESSIONALS SCHOOLED ON ROUTINE VACCINATION.

Some Media Professionals drawn from the North-West, South-West and West Regions, have been schooled on Routine Vaccination. This forum of exchange falls within the framework of Health System Strengthening. Organized by the Expanded Program on Immunization E.P.I, the workshop trained media professionals on key areas of immunization and build their capacity to produce broadcasts, spots and micro-programs in favour of immunization and to also empower them with the necessary resources to research information on immunization.   This workshop is organized within the backdrop that there has been a drop in vaccination coverage where Yellow Fever YF, Measles and Rubella MR had dropped to 79% and 71% respectively in 2018. COVID-19: NORTH WEST PUBLIC HEALTH DELEGATE RECEIVES VACCINES WITH GREAT EUPHORIA.

2020/2021 SCHOOL YEAR; ALL READY TO FIGHT COVID-19 WHILE LEARNING.

The third term of the academic year 2020/2021, started last April 12, 2021 with many school administrations, taking firm resolutions and determination to complete the syllabus for the academic year while respecting barrier measures against COVID-19. In many schools across Menchum Division, focus this term is ensuring that the students and pupils cover over 90% of their coursework especially as the academic year began late due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Government Practising Nursery School Wum, the Headmistress explained that her pupils will have an extra hour for catch-up classes. This is same for students in almost all secondary schools within the division, who already had extra classes during the Easter holidays. CHOLERA OUTBREAK: DOZEN DEAD IN BAKASSI.

Cameroonian health and emergency personnel are working to stem a cholera outbreak that has killed at least a dozen people and sickened at least 100 others in the Bakassi Peninsula that shares a maritime boundary with Nigeria. It is feared the outbreak will claim more lives in the coastal area, which lacks health infrastructure. Emergency medical workers, together with some civilians, are working to improve hygiene and sanitation by clearing dirt and debris from water beneath houses on the shores in the area. Among them is 31-year-old Cameroonian fisherman Lucas Emimo, who says he lost his younger sister to cholera. Emimo says he has joined the humanitarian workers because he fears many more people may die from the infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea, leading to dehydration and even death if untreated. “We lack toilets, potable water,” Emimo said. “There is no hospital. Officials of the Bamenda Regional Hospital have decried that the increasing challenges is leaving the blood bank empty. In 2018, the Regional Hospital Bamenda proudly announced the emergency response management scheme, to address the growing number of emergency cases in the North West Region of Cameroon – But there is another lurking problem today is that the scheme is unable to sustain itself due to an empty blood bank.
