MINHDU: MENCHUM SDO LAUNCHES COMPETITION TO GET THE CLEANNESS MUNICIPALITY.

The 1st Assistant Senior Divisional Officer for Menchum, Demanou Fabrice, has officially launched the Divisional Clean-up Campaign Competition in Wum, Menchum’s Divisional Headquarters.

 

The Clean-up Campaign Competition was launched on the heels of the national competition of "Clean Towns" 2022 edition launched on  April 11 2022 in Bertoua by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Célestine Ketcha Courtès and  the Regional competition launched on June 14 2022 in Bamenda by the Secretary General at the North-West Governor’s office, Viang Mekala.   

 

The launching ceremony brought together Divisional delegates, DOs, Mayors and stakeholders of the hygiene and sanitation sector within Menchum Division.


 

It is worth noting that the launching is in prelude to preparations for World Habitat Day (WHD) 2022 of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat). All municipalities within the Division will compete among themselves. The competition has equally been extended to municipalities within other regions of the national territory. The municipalities will be awarded based on the criteria of cleanliness, hygiene, salubrity, embellishment, waste management, mobilization of local population, amongst others.

According to the Menchum Divisional Delegate of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Chebisuh Emmanuel Neba , the national competition since its inception in 2019, has greatly encouraged local initiatives in issues of hygiene and sanitation through public sensitization as well as the actions of some local development association. The population of most neighborhoods benefitted from actions to improve drainage and sewage disposals, cleaning of gutters, the collection and disposal of several tons of plastic bottles from water courses in towns and villages around the country. There has been the general mobilization of all associations and other development groups in the quarters as a result of this competition.

 

The objectives of the "clean town" competition from the global front according to the Divisional Delegate of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Chebisuh Emmanuel Neba, is to select the Cleanest Council within the Division that will compete at the Regional Level ahead of the National Competition.

 


Also, organized at the level of the Division, this competition aims at sensitizing and mobilizing actors of the operation for the rehabilitation of urban space and the living environment, while promoting and sustaining local initiatives in matters of hygiene and sanitation.

Above all, the competition has gone a long way to enhance national mobilization for hygiene and sanitation as well as the beautification of several towns in the country.

It was revealed in the meeting that the award of prizes to winners will take place in Bertoua on the 3rd of October, 2022. It should be recalled that Bertoua was chosen as the flag bearer to host this 2022 edition of "clean towns".

The Reign of Terror in Menchum: A Horrific Encounter on the Wum-Bamenda Route

                                            The reign of terror in Menchum once again manifested itself in horrific fashion on the Wum-Bamenda road on Wednesday 5 June 2024, turning an ordinary morning journey into a nightmare. Traditional Leaders Urge Government to Address Drug Abuse in Ntarikon 2 Community

On November 20, 2024, community spokespeople from the Adjust for Me project engaged religious and traditional leaders in an open discussion during a door-to-door sensitization campaign in Ntarikon 2. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the growing concerns of drug abuse and gender-based violence (GBV) within the community. Through this dialogue, the project sought to educate both youths and religious leaders on the dangers of substance abuse and to address how gender-based violence can be reduced in both the church and local communities. Many religious leaders expressed that while some progress has been made, the increasing prevalence of drug abuse among young people remains a pressing concern.
