NORTH WEST REGIONAL ASSEMBLY: ZOOM ON PEACEBUILDING FOR HARMONIOUS DEVELOPMENT.

The seventh session of the North West Regional Assembly is holding with focus on conciliation, conflict resolution and Peacebuilding for a harmonious and wholesome development of the Region.

Opening the July Session, the President of the  North West Regional Assembly, Professor Fru Angwafo III, made it crystal clear that, for sustainable peace and development to reign in the region, it is incumbent on all of us to put hands on deck, since the road to sustainable peace is collective;

"Your contributions and mine will bring the uniqueness in the solutions that need to be applied for peace to return in our region."  Prof. Fru Angwafo III.

He also acknowledged the pivotal role of the youths in fostering development.

"Listening to youths and enrolling them in elaborating budgets and program, will build bridges, grow self esteem and self confidence as social pillars for our human development."

The July session will also act as a springboard for an operational collaboration framework in the community in respect of cultural pillars; tradition and religion. As far as laying the groundwork for the future is concerned, Regional Councilors have been challenged to carryout activities for sustainable peace and development, by working out a trauma healing project for psycho social support to bereaved persons.

The second day of the session opened with a series of exposés, during which, Dr Bamnjo Herman, schooled Regional Councilors, on Community approach to peace building and communication during crisis, while Makoudem Tene Mariane dwelled on Active and creative peace building activities in the North-West Region of Cameroon for a lasting peace.

 Mr. Kum Henry Ichu, Coordinator of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Center (DDR) Bamenda, probed into the role of the DDR Center in the peace building process.

Created through a Presidential Decree of November 30, 2028, the Center was created to give peace a chance in the face of the ongoing socio-political and security rocking the North-West and South-West Regions.

The role of this center in Peacebuilding, according to its coordinator, cannot be overemphasized, as it offers a wide range of professional skills in the process of shaping ex-combatants into new persons with a new frame of mind.

Editor's Note

The classic approach to disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) is faltering in an environment that now includes violent extremism and transnational mercenaries. Countering violent extremism and de-radicalization must be integrated within DDR. As has been seen by the number of well-educated and middle-income recruits to violent extremist organizations, DDR must refocus its goal from socioeconomic reintegration to social cohesion as a precondition to sustainably reintegrate former fighters.
