TAKE ON THE DEATH OF A COLLEAGUE AND NATION BUILDER.

I have been following with pain in my heart comments and reactions from people concerning the stabbing to deadth of a teacher by his own student.

I must confess that the problem is beyond the little boy who actualized the action. Let's look at this scenario

Classrooms harbor sometimes 100+ students for one person to manage while delivering lessons

Texts written and signed in air conditioned offices forbid teachers from interfering in discipline but are blamed for poor class management

Syllabuses are far from reaching the need of learners talk less of being exciting and interesting to them. Maths for example though part of our daily interactions, remains a nightmare causing tension between teachers and students.

Why will the boy not stab his teacher whose subject he didn't make a passed mark when teaching and learning in our schools is examination focused.

I almost forgot the emphasis and pressure from the almighty work coverage brought to bear on teachers. This victimises learners who are often left unsatisfied because Sir/Madam has to cover the syllabus.

Ooo no. Parents of these children too do not help matters because of their over protection or exaggerated neglect. Yes many children in school lack basic love and care that builds their self confidence and instill respect.

Unfortunately drug pushers have found our school milieu as a fertile market for their business. We hear stories of drug abuse in schools daily. It might interest us to know adolescence has a lot of pressure. Since parents fail to accompany their children through it, drugs help them to accompany the children.

I can go on and on. The truth remains that our educational system needs an urgent and serious overhauling which will Provide a realistic teaching and learning environment with everyone having a sense of belonging.

Reduce most of the junk subjects on the curriculum and include subjects that favor lifelong learning.
Create extra curricula activities that MANDATORILY bring parents teachers and students together on much more relax mood so as to work as a team.

Build a sense of protection for teachers by reducing the too much bureaucracy in the school functioning.

I miss the days where we saw our teachers as demi gods and accorded them such well deserved respect.

Teachers are not the target for they are nation builders.
