The maiden Elections of pioneer Regional councillors, opened hitch free early this Sunday morning, December 6th 2020 in Wum, Menchum Divisional Headquarters.
103 out of the 107 councillors, and 50 out of the 53 traditional rulers, cast their votes in the 2 polling stations of the Division, giving a percentage of 96.26% and 94.34% respectively .
By 8 a.m this Sunday morning, councillors of Wum, Benakuma, Zhoa and Furu Awa Councils, assembled at the Government Practising Nursery School to cast their votes.
After exercising their civic responsibility, Councillor Buo Ephraim of Wum council and Councillor Kum Henry Ichu of Benakuma Council, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election and joy for entering in history, through this historic moment in the life of our country.
"Am very much happy that councillors have come out in their numbers and have performed their democratic right by casting their votes. Our expectations are very high as we hope to see our various municipalities developed, as well as our Division, region and nation at large." Dixit Dighambong Anthony Mvo, Mayor Wum Council.
North West Governor, Adolphe Lélé Lafrique, made a stopover in Wum, to assess the organisation of the voting exercise. He opined that the mobilisation is quite massive and impressive.
He thanked the traditional rulers and Municipal councillors who massively answered present to vote and give legitimacy to the resolutions of the major national dialogue that gave birth to the special status.
"Today the councillors have implemented one of the resolutions of the Major National Dialogue, the puting in place of a regional council and a regional house of chiefs, as part of the special status given to the two English speaking regions of Cameroon. After this, they will have to elect chairmen of both houses."
On the security situation on Elections day, Abdoullahi Aliou, Senior Divisional Officer for Menchum Division, noted that no major hitches have been noticed as he made a tour to the polling stations.
It should be noted that the Regional elections in Wum as elsewhere in the region took place with only the Cameroon people's Democratic Movement (CPDM) taking part.
The chosen candidates ran unchallenged. This is the first time such is happening in Cameroon since the rebirth of multiparty politics in 1990.
