Renowned Cameroonian Barrister, Bernard Muna has died from a
heart disease this 6th October 2019 at the Yaounde General Hospital. He
died at the age of 79.
Who was Bernard Muna?
Born on the 27th May 1940, Bernard Muna was a lawyer and magistrate.
He obtained admission into the Bar Council at the age of twenty six
in 1966 thereby becoming the State Counsel in the office of the Attorney
General.
In 1969 he became the Magistrate in Bamenda and Chief Prosecutor of the North West Province in 1971.
He later on enrolled at the Bar of the Federated States of West Cameroon.
He was elected President of the Cameroon Bar Association in 1986.
Bernard Muna was the Country Rapporteur for penal reform and crime
prevention in 1987. He was also elected president of the Central African
Lawyer’s Union.
In 1997, Ben Muna as nicknamed by his colleagues, was appointed
Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a
position he held till 2002.
As his death was announced, some politicians reacted like Serge
Espoir Matomba who posted on Facebook, ” I have learned with dismay, the
death of Bernard Acho Muna, a great man of law. I therefore pay my due
respect to the memory of this great politician that inspired us”.
