It is with great regret and concern that
the national community has witnessed tensions and violence in the city
of Sangmélima following the unfortunate death of Assam Belinga Benjamin Junior. This
tragedy for the family, the citizens of Dja and Lobo and for the
country is a reflection of the increasing number of tragedies that are
occurring throughout the country. Dramas occurring in a context of
growing insecurity and ever-increasing precariousness of the popular masses. This
tragedy of the death of a young Cameroonian in the prime of his life
was the pretext for many acts of violence against property and people
from other parts of the country. Violence unacceptable from any point of
view.Indeed, it is unacceptable to take the law into your own hands. It
is unacceptable to indiscriminately attack members of other communities
on the pretext that they are at the root of the social, economic or
security problems observed. It is unacceptable to commit violence and
looting against other citizens. It is absolutely unacceptable to want to
turn an individual crime into a cross-community problem.Through this
sad spectacle, we see – all of us – how some compatriots, in despair,
seem to have lost their reason and sense of measure.
Cameroon does not need a new source of tension. All of us, as Cameroonians, must ensure that calm returns and that fundamental issues are properly addressed.Through these blind and violent crowd movements, we observe the result of the inadequacies and failures of social and economic integration policies that leave large numbers of young men and women, condemned to survive as best they can. The lack of education, employment and social mobility are factors that expose many compatriots to the winds of banditry, incivility and sometimes rejection of others. When, in addition, such land is fertilized by speeches of manipulation by the false elites who, unable to implement projects that raise the level of education and improve living conditions, use these masses as electoral livestock, we are indeed in a worrying situation.
The CPP calls on everyone to be calm, measured, reserved, cautious and circumspect in speaking. There
are injustices, tensions, uneasiness and conflicts that exist, that
cannot be denied and that must be treated together, in a calm and
peaceful manner.
The CPP
considers that the family of young Assam Belinga Benjamin Junior is
entitled to justice. She has the right to know who is responsible for
this crime and to have it tried in strict compliance with the law.
The
CPP believes that those responsible for violence against persons and
damage to property should be punished. In addition, victims must be
cared for and compensated.
The
CPP considers that, beyond the ongoing tensions, a process of
appeasement must be initiated among the populations through sincere
dialogue and education of the latter in the fundamental values and
principles of both our country and our centuries-old cultures.
The
CPP believes that the best antidote to this type of violence remains
social and economic solutions to people’s problems. When school is
running, jobs are created and general living conditions improve, the
risk of such explosions decreases.
The
CPP calls on us not to forget that the phenomenon of popular
vindictiveness and community tensions are unfortunately observed in more
and more parts of our country. They are powerful indicators of a
failure whose fuels are the mistrust of the populations towards the
false elites and the treason of these elites towards the
populations. Through these events, who still doubts the increasingly
urgent need to rebuild the foundations on which this country operates?
Through these tensions, who still doubts the failure of a mode of
governance characterized by the absences, distance and silences of the
Head of State? The time is no longer that of an outdated President. It is
the time of the People and of taking charge of their problems in depth. It is up to us to draw all the consequences.
