The President of the Cameroon Bar Association, Barrister Tchakoute
Patie Charles, has reminded lawyers in Cameroon to use their robes with
dignity in line with the canons of the profession.
In a statement issued on 18th October 2019, he strongly condemned the
attitude of his colleagues who visited the leader of the Cameroon
Renaissance Movement CRM in their robes.
To him the visit in their robes to the political Leader, who was
recently released from prison by presidential decision, raises a lot of
controversy and reactions.
Social networks carried a photo of some 20 lawyers in black court
robes in the private home of the presidential candidate 2018, Pr.
Maurice Kamto.
In a response to the comments the spokesman of Maurice Kamto,
posted on Facebook on 18th October 2019, that the group of lawyers are
those ensuring his defence, that of his allies.
Tchakoute Patie Charles lamented the publication of the “souvenir
photo in black robes” stating that, The Cameroon Bar is not a political
party”.
He specified that lawyers should only put on their professional
costume during court sessions occasions or during official ceremonies.
He said though lawyers have the right to belong to political parties,
the lawyer’s dress may be worn within individual homes only after a
special authorization from the president.
